Parents who do want to make their own baby food have to be
careful and keep a few things in mind:
- VEGETABLES
Steam or bake vegetables until soft (steaming and baking
helps retain the nutrients) then use a food mill, blender
or food processor to purée. Don’t add spices or salt,
even to the water for boiling. Serve at room temperature.
Freeze food in ice cube trays covered with plastic wrap.
For younger infants, fill trays half or quarter full.
Once the cubes are frozen, put one or two in a sealable
plastic bag and then mark the date. Thoroughly reheat
in a saucepan or microwave as needed, but let cool to
room temperature before serving. Freeze up to six months.
- FRUITS
Peel, then poach, fruits like apples, pears or apricots
before puréeing. Ripe avocado, melon, mango, papaya and
banana can simply be mashed. Freeze for up to six months.
- MEATS & ALTERNATIVES
Steam chicken, poach fish and simply mash silk tofu. They
can be frozen for up to one month.
- FEEDING
If you feed baby out of a plate and she doesn’t finish
her food, throw the leftovers away. The bacteria from
baby’s mouth can contaminate the rest of the food.
